Principal’s Message:

As we begin 2020 it has just amazed me how quickly our school year is moving along. I may have this feeling due to the great behavior exhibited by our students. As I visit classrooms I love to see the great instruction occurring as well as the participation of our students. Along with visiting classrooms, I also love seeing all of the parent volunteers helping out each day. All of these factors play into the fact that once again our school’s official state test results from last May indicate that our students are scoring “above standards” in reading and math.
In language arts, our 3rd – 6th grade students scored 69.1 points above standard. This is a 4.2 point increase over last year. In math, our 3rd – 6th grade students scored 49.6 points above standard. This is a 9.4 point increase over last year. The only area keeping us from qualifying for the California Distinguished School award is our absentee rate. We struggle with our attendance rate due to the many families who take vacations during the school year. If you would like more information on our school test scores, you can go to:

Holiday Boutique Thank You:
Thank you to all of our parents who volunteered at the December holiday boutique. Our children enjoyed shopping for gifts for their families, and the boutique was well organized and efficient.

January Holidays:
We will be observing Dr. Martin Luther King’s birthday on Monday, January 20. School will not be in session on this day. Have a great three day weekend. Also, GGUSD has a non-student day scheduled for Monday, January 27th.

PTA Restaurant Night:
Our next PTA restaurant night is Tuesday, January 14th at Chipotle Restaurant. A flier will be coming out soon with all of the details.

Barker January Character Trait:
The character trait we will focus on for our Student of the Month award for January will be “trustworthiness.” January’s Student of the Month assembly will be held on Wednesday, January 29 at 9:45 AM.

Book Fair Thank You:
Thank you to all of the families who supported our book fair by purchasing books and other items. The purpose of the book fair is two-fold; one, to get quality books out into our students’ homes, and two, to get new books for our library. This event helps keep our library current with new books, and replacing old books. Thank you again for your support of this event. Congratulation to those students who were chosen for the daily book raffle, and to Harper Carey for winning the guessing game (how many cotton balls in a jar? Guess 375; actual 377).

Mother/Son Dance Night/Glow Party:
Our PTA is sponsoring a fun night for moms and their sons. Last year was game night, and this year will be a night of dancing. The theme is “glow” with glow sticks, necklaces, etc. It is a great evening and fun for all. I hope to see a great crowd in our MPR dancing and having fun! Our father/daughter evening is scheduled for Friday, May 8th.

Progress Reports:
Progress reports will be sent home the week of February 3rd. Not all students will receive a progress report. Only those students not meeting academic grade level standards, struggling in citizenship, or having trouble with responsibility for learning, will receive a progress report. The purpose of this report is to notify you of the struggles your child is having, and allow you to work with the teacher to hopefully help your child improve before the second trimester report card is completed and sent home.

Parent Education Night:
Our first parent education night is scheduled for Thursday, January 23rd at 6:00 PM in the multi-purpose room. Mrs. Ucker will be leading this event that begins at 6:00 and ends at 7:00. More information will be coming out soon.
